Experience the Way of Tea: Special Tea Demonstrations
Experience the traditional tea ceremony in spectacular contemporary tea houses, led by tea masters from various tea schools in Japan. The tea houses are designed and installed by renowned Japanese designer Shigeru Uchida, who will also create a stunning seating area in the Society's lobby allowing for a leisurely tea experience. Mr. Uchida will also speak about his work on the evening of October 22 at Japan Society. Tea will be served in exquisite Oribe ware from Gifu Prefecture.

Tea demonstrations will be conducted every hour from 12 noon to 5 pm on October 22 (Wednesday) and from 11 am to 4 pm on October 23 (Thursday). Each session is limited to 16 people.

This exhibition will explore the dramatic stylistic changes in Japanese ceramics during the 16th century, as illustrated by the colors and shapes of Oribe ware produced during the Momoyama period (1573-1615). The exhibition consisting of over 200 works, including screen paintings, ceramics, lacquerware, and textiles will examine the origins of Oribe ceramic ware, its development during the brief but brilliant Momoyama period, and its relationship to contemporary arts.

Samurai Art Adventure
Families are invited for a fun afternoon of art, music and storytelling.
This special Education program, designed for families with children between the ages of 5 and 12, will explore the samurai culture of Japan through its arts and armor. ARCHITECTS FORUM Hitoshi Abe
Noted architect Hitoshi Abe is the principal of Atelier Hitoshi Abe in Sendai, which he founded in 1992. He is known for highly innovative public buildings and residential structures, including Shirasagi Bridge in Shiroishi, Miyagi (1994); a stadium in Miyagi (2001); and, most recently, a community center in Reihoku, Kumamoto (2002). Mr. Abe, who was trained both in Japan and in the U.S., is also a Professor in the Urban Design Laboratory at Tohoku University in Sendai. A recipient of numerous honors, including the prestigious Yoshioka Award (1998) and the Architectural Institute of Japan Award (2003), he has had his work shown in such important international exhibitions as the Milan Triennale (1996), the Venice Biennale (2000), Towards Totalscape: Contemporary Archietcture, Urban Design and Landscape (2000), and 45 under 45: Young Architecture from Japan, a traveling exhibition that originated in Vienna in 2002. Butoh Workshop with Yukio Waguri
Yukio Waguri, Artistic Director and founder of Kohzensha Butoh Company, began his career under the direction of butoh founder Tatsumi Hijikata. Beginning with his stage debut in Hijikata's 27 Nights for Four Seasons, Waguri kept notes on the words Hijikata spoke while choreographing. These words are called butoh-fu (butoh notation), Hijikata's unique method for choreography. The workshop includes a lecture on butoh-fu and a video screening and concludes with a body movement session. No dance experience is necessary for this workshop. Max. 20 participants.

INSIDE THE STUDIO: Shigeru Uchida
Widely regarded as one of the most influential designers in Japan since the 1970s, Shigeru Uchida is Principal of the pioneering design firm Studio 80, which he co-founded in 1981. Mr. Uchida, whose work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, is known for a wide range of design projects in Japan and abroad that combine traditional and contemporary elements, including interior works, furniture, products and urban planning. Many of his works are featured in the permanent collections of prominent museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Conran Foundation in London. Among his most notable works are the Wave building in Roppongi, Tokyo; a series of boutiques for Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake; the Hotel Il Palazzo in Fukuoka; the lobby of the Kyoto Hotel; and the Kobe Fashion Museum. Mr. Uchida has also been a leading advocate of the new way of tea and has designed a number of avant-garde tea rooms, two of which will be on display at Japan Society to coincide with his lecture. Mr. Uchida discusses his major projects and also addresses the unique Japanese concept of space and its traditional and contemporary meanings.

Grace & Power: Women & the Martial Arts in Japan
Miyako Fujitani, a pioneer female Aikido instructor in Japan, stresses that the most important factor in the art of Aikido is not physical strength but the skill to control the flow of energy. Ms. Fujitani, Head Instructor of Aikido Tenshin Dojo in Osaka, which she co-founded in 1976, discusses the history of Aikido, its spiritual/philosophical background, its connection with other traditional Japanese arts, her own techniques and style, and her experiences for more than 20 years as a leading female figure in a profession which, by tradition, has been dominated by men. The program includes a demonstration of important techniques and movements by Ms. Fujitani and her disciples.
